In Memory

Russell Fischer

Russell Keith Fischer passed away suddenly at home on Wednesday evening June 15. He was born May 28, 1947 in Palo Alto, CA., the second child of John and Dariel (Fraser) Fischer. His childhood was spent in Sacramento, CA and Salt Lake City, UT, where he graduated from Olympus High School in 1965. He earned his associate degree from American River College in Carmichael, CA and attended the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Russ served two years in the Army and was stationed in Tooele, UT. Afterwards he returned to Sacramento. Russ married Linda Gail Owen on Feb. 24, 1974 in Carmichael, CA. That summer his family opened Fischer's Firestone Tire and Auto Repair in Glenbrook Plaza in Grass Valley, CA. Russ was store manager and then owner after the death of his father. He sold the store in 2005 and began his second career at Grocery Outlet. This was a job he loved and looked forward to each day. Taking care of the plants inside the store was his specialty. Russ retired in May to devote more time to traveling and working in his garden. He was known for sharing his "famous tomatoes" friends would say. Russ was admired for his honesty, dependability and dry sense of humor. Russ was a charter member of Gold Country Lions Club, past president, and a recipient of the life membership award. He owned a collection of classic cars of which he was especially proud. He was greatly loved by his family. Russ is survived by his wife Linda; brother John (Doris); sister Lynn (Joseph) Skalsky; aunt and uncle Alice and Alex Muggli; nephews, Scott (Cindy) Gerving, Brian (Katherine) Gerving, Richard Spencer, David Spencer, Benjamin Thompson, Steven Thompson; numerous cousins; stepsisters, Cynthia (Dennis Chesters) Lockley, Judy (John) Bodine and her children Rosalia Ochoa and Jason (Connie) Ochoa. Russ was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother Helen Fischer; grandparents; and half sister Stephanie Kuehner. A Celebration of Life will be held at Hooper and Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City, CA. (Private services for family members will be held the day before.)
